The Post reports that the House will hold a hearing next week on the law that limits D.C. buildings to 130 feet in height, pushing forward on an idea floated by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and various local officials earlier this year.
Proponents of the idea argue that raising the height limits—which date back over a century—would allow for more development opportunities, especially in a city that’s running out of space and notoriously expensive to live and work in. Opponents say that the limits have contributed to D.C.’s character and open skyline, and that any changes would threaten both. In April, D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton said that while she wasn’t enamored with the idea, she might be open to raising height limits outside of the city’s monumental core.
The hearing will take place next Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
