Photo courtesy of car2goIt’s been just over three months since car2go—the by-the-minute car-sharing service—launched in D.C., and late last week the company announced that it was adding 100 of its distinctive blue-and-white Smart Cars to the 200 already here.
Currently, there are 8,500 car2go members in D.C., and our fair city is the fastest-growing car2go city in North America. (Car2go is available in 12 cities worldwide, including Austin, Portland, Toronto, Vancouver, and San Diego on this side.) According to the company, the system’s 200 cars are driven some 4,200 a week on trips ranging from three to six miles and lasting between 30 and 45 minutes.
Zipcar is still the dominant car-sharing force in the area, though, with some 60,000 members and 800 cars. And car2go doesn’t necessarily threaten Zipcar: while the latter’s cars can be reserved, the former’s are better for spur-of-the-moment uses. Additionally, car2go users don’t have to worry about parking—the company paid D.C. $578,000 for a year of no parking tickets.
