The State Department is breaking up next week. No, not the government bureaucracy. The local noisy indie rockers are calling it quits about two-and-a-half years after their debut in late 2009. Aaron Baird, the band’s drummer, is off to London, so the group is moving on.

But before the band ends its run next week at U Street Music Hall, they’ve released one last five-song EP. True to The State Department’s form, its a rager. Well, 80 percent of it at least. The fourth track, “French by Spilled Blood,” drops the jagged-edge guitar riffs for a sweet, almost shoegazy affect.

The opening song, “Mount Pleasant,” however, is a storming tribute to that neighborhood, and features as the bridge to its coda an electrified lift of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. The complete EP is available as a pay-what-you-want download (i.e., free if you feel like it, but maybe tip your band?) on The State Department’s Bandcamp page.

The State Department plays Wednesday, August 15 at 7 p.m. at U Street Music Hall (1115A U Street NW). With Imperial China and Typefighter, so, it’s going to be loud. Tickets $10.
