It’s a sad state of affairs when we’re celebrating the re-opening of an escalator, but hey, that’s where Metro is these days.
The transit agency announced today that the south entrance of the Dupont Circle Metro station will re-open on Sunday after eight months worth of work on fully replacing the escalators. WMATA General Manager Richard Sarles will be on hand for the ribbon-cutting, which will take place at noon.
The work on the escalators is part of broader seven-year plan to replace up to 94 escalators throughout the system. Beyond the usual troubles on the trains due to deferred maintenance, escalators have often been the bain of any commuter’s existence while using the transit agency to get around.
