Here’s some good news for drivers worried about getting a speeding ticket on four of the Districts biggest thoroughfares. Mayor Vince Gray ordered today that the speed limits on sections of New York Avenue NE, Bladensburg Road NE, North Capitol Street and Canal Road NW increase by five miles per hour.
The emergency rule-making comes a few weeks after Gray ordered that the speed limits on stretches of Benning Road NE and the Anacostia Freeway be increased. All of the roadways included in this round are also heavy commuter routes without much residential buildup or utility for cyclists.
On New York Avenue, the speed limit will be raised from 40 miles per hour to 45 for vehicles traveling east from Bladensburg Road to the Maryland state line, and from 35 to 40 in the opposite direction. The District issued about 17,000 tickets generated by traffic cameras on that stretch in fiscal 2012.
The limit will go from 25 miles per hour to 30 on Bladensburg between New York Avenue and the intersection with Mount Olivet Road and 17th Street NE.
On Canal Road, where there were 12,828 camera-generated penalties last fiscal year, the speed limit will go from 35 to 40 miles per hour between the Chain Bridge and the intersection with Foxhall Road NW.
And on North Capitol Street, drivers will now be permitted to go 40 miles per hour between Michigan Avenue and Harewood Road.
The increases take effect Tuesday at 12:01 a.m.
