President Obama will be inaugurated into his second term in 11 days. With January 21, 2013 rapidly approaching, hotels, restaurants and other merchants across the D.C. area are grabbing at the opportunity to raise their rates for this quadrennial celebration of patriotism. And sometimes, they go too far. “Ridiculous Inauguration Deal of the Day” will examine the most ludicrous offerings we can find.
Rooms at the Morrison House Hotel in Alexandria begin at $309 per night for a four-night stay beginning January 18. That’s actually quite reasonable for four-star accommodations on what will likely be the busiest weekend of the year for D.C.’s tourism industry.
But, come on, $309 a night? That’s chump change compared to what the 45-room boutique hotel might sell to one wealthy individual. For the princely sum of $200,000, Kimpton Hotels will give you the entirety of the Morrison House. The whole thing. Every guest room, thrice-daily meal service at Chef Brian McPherson’s highly-rated Grille at Morrison House and a plethora of fancy Inauguration-themed extras.
Among the largesse:
- Twenty-four-hour butler service provided by a seasoned and highly-attentive staff.
- Private transportation for the group to and from Inaugural Balls.
- One private house car for guest use, based on availability throughout stay.
- Keepsake gifts including pillowcases and silk pajamas monogrammed with the personal initials of each guest and the Inauguration date.
- On one evening, enjoy dinner and drinks with a special performance by former White House pianist Robert Smith, who played for every administration from Nixon through Clinton.
- Nightly cocktail receptions in the Library, featuring a different tasting each evening, ranging from a whiskey-tasting class to champagne-sabering demonstration and tasting.
- Late-evening reception at the hotel each night, catering to personal preferences of group.
Seriously, look at some of those perks: Butlers! White House piano recitals! Commemorative pajamas! Kimpton Hotels is basically providing everything for you and 89 of your fat-cat friends except perhaps top hats and monocles, though you could always order the chauffer take you to the nearest millinery.
So, if you’ve got 200 large to drop on an inaugural blowout, give Morrison House (116 Alfred Street, Arlington) a call at (703) 838-8000. And, by the way, props to the hotel’s publicist, who contacted DCist knowing full well the cheeky tone of these “Ridiculous Inauguration Deal of the Day” posts and did not mind at all that we make fun of her employer. It’s almost enough to make one believe in Northern Virginia.
