The Metropolitan Police Department reported the city’s first bicycle fatality over the weekend, writing that 28-year-old Antonio Alvarez-Benitez fell off of his bike after something he was carrying got stuck in his front wheel:
On Saturday, January 12, 2013, at approximately 4:53 am, a Fourth District Officer was flagged down in reference to an unconscious person in the 700 block of Morton Street, NW. Upon arrival, the officer located an unconscious adult male bicyclist lying in the roadway. The investigation revealed that it was apparent that the property the victim had tied down became loose, fell, and lodged within the front fender, spokes and forks of the bicycle causing the victim to lose control and fall. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel transported the victim to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
An MPD spokesman said that Alvarez-Benitez hit his head during the fall, but that there wasn’t yet any information on whether he was wearing a helmet. Police are asking for any information from the public on the incident; call (202) 727-9099 or text your tip to 50411.
