The Office of the Chief Financial Officer announced today that any outstanding tickets for parking or traffic camera violations would simply be taken out of income tax refunds, pursuant to a law passed by the D.C. Council last year. According to the CFO, D.C. expects to collect $2.5 million a year for the next four years this way.
That’s a start, but it’s a drop in the bucket of what D.C. is really owed—$395 million, of which $380 million is in the form of delinquent tickets, fines and fees to the DMV. A good chunk of that is held by out-of-state drivers, which will now be hounded by a new Central Collections Unit within the CFO’s office.
If any part of your refund is withheld to cover the cost of an unpaid ticket, you’ll receive notice and be allowed to appeal.
