A woman boarding a flight on Monday at Dulles International Airport was stopped briefly by the Transportation Security Administration after an X-ray scanner found that her walking cane was concealing a sword.

Yep, really. And though a bladed weapon sheathed in an innocent-looking walking stick sounds like the stuff of James Bond, the TSA says it happens far more often than one might expect. (Actually, in The World Is Not Enough, the Russian kingpin Valentin Zukovsky concealed a single-shot revolver in his cane. A better movie analogy might be A Clockwork Orange, in which Alex DeLarge yanks a dagger from his walking stick.)

The Associated Press reports that even though the woman was clueless that her cane was actually masking a sword, the agency is taking steps to make sure incidents like this decrease:

TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein says it’s not uncommon for people to unwittingly carry canes that conceal weapons. The agency sent out an advisory Wednesday suggesting passengers with canes try to unscrew the top before heading out to the airport, just in case.

The woman at Dulles will not face any charges and was allowed to board her flight—albeit without the cane.
