Though gloomy, 80’s synth-pop revivalists Miyazaki’s newest album, Color of Glass, was released in January, the catchy record hasn’t received much fanfare. That’s a bit surprising, considering the band’s brand of dancey pop tunes isn’t at all bashful about its obvious influences.

Take, for instance this track, “Sequence,” which is about as shameless a New Order rip-off as you could get. Though that doesn’t mean the track isn’t good. It is. Still, the track doesn’t seem to make any illusions about lifting riffs and hooks from the influential New Wave band. Right from the restrained, subdued, yet danceable beat to the synthy riffs and jangly guitar hooks, “Sequence” sounds like a combination of the best parts of New Order’s “Temptation” and “Ceremony”. However, that’s not all that surprising considering that of the recent 80’s musical revivals, synth-pop has become one of the more omnipresent (let’s just hope 80’s hair metal stays dead).

And, as DCist contributor Rohan Mahadevan pointed out, yes, this band should have to pay some royalties on this.
