The sinkhole that busted open yesterday at 14th and F streets NW is still there this morning, and people heading downtown should expect delays, detours, and other hold-ups as crews continue to work on closing the maw.

The hole, which broke open between noon and 1 p.m. yesterday, measures about 15 feet deep. Crews from DC Water are taking the lead in making repairs, while Metropolitan Police Department officers and the District Department of Transportation reroute vehicles around several affected blocks of both 14th and F streets.

Pamela Mooring, a spokeswoman for the water utility said that workers are still determining what caused the chasm to open up. Mooring did say that at the bottom of the pit a DC Water sewer line was damaged when concrete casing from another utility line fell from above.

Fourteenth Street remains closed off between New York and Pennsylvania avenues NW, and F Street is blocked from 13th to 15th streets NW. Metro is rerouting its 52, 54, and 11Y bus routes around the affected blocks. DDOT is advising drivers to use Constitution Avenue as an east-west alternate route.

Mooring said yesterday that DC Water expects to finish its repair work around midday, though it could take longer.
