The bones arrive in D.C. Courtesy of One Million Bones. If you visit the National Mall this weekend, don’t freak out if you see a ton of bones on the ground. It’s art!
Volunteers for the One Million Bones project will install one million (fake! handcrafted!) bones on the Mall between Third and Seventh Streets NW from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The installation is meant to raise awareness about mass atrocities.
A Saturday afternoon event will feature speakers including actress Robin Wright and former Congressman Tom Perriello (D-Va.). On Sunday, educational workshops will be held for most of the day in a tent on the Mall. A candlelight vigil will take place at 7:30 p.m. Volunteers will carry the bones to the Capitol on Monday before advocacy hearings and a screening of Across the Frontlines, a documentary about genocide in Sudan, will be held on the Hill.
The group has been collecting the bones for the past three years, according to their Web site. The installation is a project of the Art of Revolution, which uses art to try to inspire social change.
