Just a few hours after power was restored to parts of D.C. hit by a blackout yesterday, thousands of residents in those same neighborhoods are once again in the dark on a hot, sweltering day. Nearly 4,500 Pepco customers in Shaw, Bloomingdale, and Logan Circle lost power about 2:15 p.m.
Marcus Beal, a spokesman for the power utility, said crews have been dispatched to a feeder line that is believed to be the source of the current outage, though he did not specify where the line is located.
About 5,500 Pepco customers lost power Sunday when the company’s substation on Benning Road NE suffered an equipment failure that cut out electricity to two feeder lines that serve central D.C. Power was not restored until all affected customers until about 3 a.m. Monday. Beal could not say if the same piece of equipment is responsible for the current outage.
Yesterday’s blackout caused several businesses, such as Shaw’s Tavern, to close up early for the day. The restaurant, located at 520 Florida Avenue, just had to suspend lunch service again.
The outage is also affecting traffic lights and Metro’s Shaw-Howard University station, where elevators and escalators are out of service, and passengers stepping of trains are entering a platform covered in darkness.
