The Washington Humane Society is currently experiencing what it’s calling a Catnado, a nod to the recent SyFy masterpiece Sharknado. The poster the agency created to accompany its figurative tornado full of cats is pretty cute, but the problem is not.

The shelters have been inundated with felines this week, which means there are currently more cats than there are cages, according to Scott Giacoppo, the Washington Humane Society’s vice president of external affairs. Every space where a cat can be humanely kept, including offices, is being used at the moment. But as of this morning, there were 12 too many cats.

Adoption fees have been waived through this Saturday, meaning the Washington Humane Society is basically giving away cats to screened candidates. “We’re trying to save as many lives as we can,” Giacoppo said. “As soon as one goes out, two come in.”

The Washington Humane Society is trying to keep its “save rate” in the mid-80 percent range, an all-time high. In bleaker terms: They’re trying not to kill cats. Learn more about adoptable pets here.
