Sketch comedy show Smellin’ Up the Den is at its best when at its raunchiest. A cast of five men and a woman, budding actors and comedians, draw chuckles the whole way through. But it can take a bit extra to make this critic to laugh out loud.
This production starts with some decent gags and picks up steam after one of the ensemble enters the stage with shopping bags in hand, admitting to his friends that he just splurged on himself — and loves doing it all the time. You soon realize where the skit is going, as the double entendres start flowing in rapid succession.
The show was originally staged by the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York, and revised and recast for its stint at Capital Fringe. Over the course of one hour, with some recurring gags, medium-length and short sketches, and a hilarious pre-filmed parody commercial in the spirit of the granddaddy of sketch comedy, Saturday Night Live, Scott Courlander and David Juliano have some good material and a game cast to deliver it.
