Forget royal baby watch (No, really guys, let it go): Something more exciting has arrived on Capitol Hill. The “dead elephant” stink of the U.S. Botanic Garden’s corpse flower was finally unleashed this weekend.
The titan arum, which earned its nickname thanks to its “rotting flesh” smell, began to bloom Sunday afternoon. It should stay open for 24 to 48 hours, according to the Botanic Garden.
The conservatory will offer extended hours today, opening at 10 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m. The last time the Botanic Garden’s corpse flower bloomed was 2007.
The Botanic Garden is still live streaming the titan arum, but sadly there’s no close-up cam for reactions to the smell.
