The Lincoln Memorial was closed temporarily after receiving an unwanted bath of green paint early Friday morning. Early-rising joggers and other visitors approached the memorial to find it taped off by police investigating a wide splotch of paint on the base of the sculpture of Abraham Lincoln.

U.S. Park Police were alerted to the vandalism about 1:30 a.m. and found the paint splattered on the 16th president’s knee and leg. The memorial is currently closed to visitors as police investigate and, of course, scrub off the paint.

Police say they are reviewing surveillance footage from the memorial and the vicinity, but so far there are no suspects. The paint also appeared to be simply splashed across the statue and not shaped into any words or patterns.

The Lincoln Memorial has long been one of the most popular tourist sites in D.C., leading all landmarks in 2012 with six million visitors, who contributed $204 million to the local economy.

UPDATE, 12:46 p.m.: The steps and portico of the Lincoln Memorial were reopened about 10:15 a.m. The chamber housing the sculpture of the seated 16th president was reopened about 12:45 p.m. after Park Police finished scrubbing off the paint with a power washer.
