Last month, the D.C. Taxicab Commission announced that it would give some cabs an extra month to install credit card payment systems, which were supposed to be in place by the end of August. Now a group of cab drivers are petitioning for even more time. But it doesn’t seem they’ll get it.

Drivers who are given the extension still need to be signed up with a payment service provider by August 15. As WAMU and WTOP reported, some drivers think this isn’t enough time to find a service provider, or change providers if they’re not happy with their first choice. Even though the petition has more than 1,000 signatures, it likely won’t do anything

Ron Linton, chairman of the commission, told WTOP no further extensions will be given.

“They put themselves forth as businessmen. This is what they have to do. Be businessmen. They simply have to knuckle down and do their jobs,” he says.

As Linton told WAMU, any cab found without a credit card payment system by the deadline will be impounded.

While the drivers told WAMU they planned to deliver the petition by Friday, it doesn’t seem they have met that deadline. According to Commission spokesman Neville Waters, no petition has been received.
