D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and Councilmember Vincent Orange (D-At Large) are scheduled to attend a “town hall meeting” tonight in support of the Large Retailer Accountability Act, two months after the the bill passed 8-5.
Organized by Respect DC, Faith Strategies and UFCW Local 400, the meeting will take place at the Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church (3000 Pennsylvania Avenue SE) at 6:30 p.m. Supporters of the LRAA, or the living wage act, will urge Mayor Vincent Gray to sign the bill, which opponents say unfairly targets Wal-Mart.
Mendelson’s spokeswoman confirmed that he is scheduled to attend. Orange’s spokesman said the councilmember will serve as the moderator. While organizers said an invitation would be extended to Mayor Vincent Gray, his spokesman Pedro Ribeiro said the mayor would not attend the “pep rally for the bill.”
Steven Restivo, senior director of communication for Wal-Mart, sent an e-mail to reporters, saying, “At tonight’s labor rally in support of the Large Retailer Accountability Act, you’ll likely hear the usual urban myths about Walmart.”
“The fact remains that each new store we open is an opportunity to show that their rhetoric doesn’t match reality.”
Gray has yet to receive the bill from Mendelson. After he does, he’ll have a week to either sign or veto it.
