Here’s another group calling for D.C. to stay open in the event of a federal government shutdown: The D.C. Republican Party.

In a press release, the D.C. GOP asks Speaker of the House John Boehner to work with Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) “to again pass the necessary legislation to permit the District government to remain open.” Norton spoke on the House floor last night, asking Congress to pass her District of Columbia Government Shutdown Avoidance Act of 2013, which “would permanently prevent D.C. government shutdowns by authorizing the District government to spend its local funds in the event of a federal shutdown.”

“We support the Speaker in his efforts to reign in federal spending. But this is not about federal dollars,” D.C. Republican Party executive director Robert Turner said in a release. “This is about locally collected tax dollars. No other American city is forced to close during a federal government shut down. The District of Columbia should not be forced to do so either.”

Turner added that the group doesn’t support the Council’s approach to avoiding a D.C. government shutdown. On Tuesday, the Council will vote on emergency legislation to declare all D.C. government employees are “essential.” Money for the paychecks during a shutdown would likely come from the city’s contingency reserve fund.

Mayor Vincent Gray declared the same thing in a letter this week to the Office of Management and Budget, who has yet to respond.

In an email to DCist, Turner said his group reached out to Boehner’s office with their request just before they put out today’s press release: “Waiting to hear back.”
