Photo by Ranpuba. It’s not even Halloween yet, but already stores are lining their shelves with Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other seasonal merchandise. In mid-November, most of the area’s ice rinks—including the one in Georgetown’s Washington Harbour and the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden—are slated to open, officially signaling the beginning of the holiday season.
Unfortunately, the Canal Park ice skating rink in Navy Yard—which launched last year—won’t be among those. Apparently, a massive “flooding incident caused by a ruptured pipe in the rink’s pump room” has caused a significant delay in the ice rink’s opening this year, according to Canal Park’s website.
David Garber, Neighborhood Commissioner for Navy Yard, tells DCist that he’s not quite sure what happened and he’s not sure if anyone knows either: “There was a flooding incident that was caused by a ruptured pipe. They’re trying to figure out what exactly caused it and how to fix it to get the ice rink up and running.” He says the opening will be delayed at least a month, to mid-December, which Canal Park manager Janet Weston confirmed.
“I’m not sure why it’s going to take a month to repair these ruptures,” Garber says, “but that’s what I’ve been told.” Weston also didn’t have any information on why the pipe ruptured.
