Today, we’re premiering the first music video from Joy Buttons—a new D.C. hardcore group. Though the members of Joy Buttons all come from various other bands, the sum of their parts could not be more different from their other projects. The band, which consists of vocalist Brandon Moses (Laughing Man/Paperhaus), guitarist Ryan McLaughlin (Typefighter), bassist Matt Dowling (Deleted Scenes), guitarist Erik Sleight (Lightfoot/Mittenfields), and drummer Dan Ramspacher (Pray for Polanski), plays straight-up, ’80s harDCore-inspired punk.
Their first single, the unapologetically titled “Fuck Up,” is a genuine barnburner. A blistering, no-frills anthem that kicks things off with a punch and never lets up. Moses’ controlled, but abrasive screams are accompanied by the wailing guitar duo of McLaughlin and Sleight, while the rhythm section of Dowling and Ramspacher muscles on. The song is from Joy Buttons’ forthcoming debut E.P., Arkhipov, which comes out next week. The accompanying video (which is NFSW-ish) is appropriately destructive and seductive: A faceless beaut covered in black body paint smashes and destroys a collection of things. It’s slickly polished, but appropriately anarchic.
