Courtesy Washington National Cathedral. The woman accused of splattering green paint at the National Cathedral, and suspected of doing so at the Lincoln Memorial, appeared in court today.
Jiamei Tian, also identified in court records as Jia Tian, was admitted to a psychiatric ward in August and was ruled incompetent to stand trial in late October. However, a psychiatrist reported that she would be able to stand trial in the “foreseeable future.”
But not today. Both the government and Tian’s attorney agreed with a report that recommended making further attempts to restore her competency. A Mandarin translator was present at today’s hearing. Through the translator, Tian expressed dissatisfaction with her attorney. She was able to discuss this with the judge, but their discussion was private.
Dressed in scrubs and a puffy coat, Tian spoke in English to say “Thank you” to the U.S. Marshall who removed her handcuffs and say “Goodbye” to the judge.
Tian was found at the Cathedral on the day of the vandalism with green paint on her arm and left shoe. She will next appear in court on January 8.
