American University locked down its campus for about 90 minutes this evening following a report of a man with a gun. A man who turned out to be an off-duty police officer.
The Northwest D.C. university sent out a shelter in place notice at 7:55 p.m., saying a “man with gun [was] seen on campus.” The Metropolitan Police Department and AU Public Safety responded and searched for the reported man. At 8:45 p.m., AU released a photo of two “individuals” who the school warned “not to approach.” By 9:25 p.m., the school lifted the lockdown and said a “suspect [is] in custody.”
That, however, wasn’t accurate. The woman in the photo, an AU student, took to Twitter to say the man was her boyfriend and an off-duty police officer.
@The_MikeAustin It’s been a VERY weird day and uh, yeah, talk about #awkward. And during exam week, too!

Police later confirmed this, saying no crime had taken place and only the man’s holster was spotted.
And that photo of the two innocent people? It shall live in Internet infamy.
