Just look how happy this woman is in her box fort. (Image via Shutterstock)
Chances are most of you reading this now are at your boring nine-to-five job, counting down the minutes until the clock strikes 5 p.m. Then you’ll spend, on average, about an hour getting home, after which you’ll eat some food, spend some time with your family (or your cat), go to bed at a reasonable hour, wake up tomorrow, repeat.
First off, I’d like to applaud you for wasting your time at work reading DCist. Secondly, I’d like you to take a moment and think back to your childhood: A time when you need not worry about deadlines or the boss breathing down your neck; a time when a simple cardboard box could keep you entertained for hours; a time when building forts—on your couch, bed, or wherever—was the ultimate past time. A time when the world was yours.
What if I told you that those days weren’t behind you? What if I told that you that no, you’re not to old to build a fort, dammit?
Well, that’s exactly what I’m telling you, because the National Building Museum has announced that they’re hosting an Ultimate Megafort: Adults Edition event on Thursday, January 16. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., museum staff will teach “basic fort structure,” before you can put your skills to the test and work with others to design and build a cardboard fort, according to the event description. After your kingdom is constructed, you’ll test its strength in the form of an epic foam ball battle against rival forts, Game of Thrones-style (OK, I made that last part up, but, you know, imagination!). There’ll also be snacks and adult beverages, because you are an adult.
Sound like a dumb millennial event or an awesome opportunity to recapture the imagination of your childhood? That’s up to you.
