The National Zoo’s lion Nababiep gave birth to three cubs last week, two of which survived.

According to a release, the first cub was born to the 10-year-old lion at 3:58 a.m. on January 24, “and appeared active and healthy.” A second arrived stillborn five hours later (not an uncommon occurrence, the Zoo says), but a third was born healthy later that morning. The cubs have been under observation and “they appear to be nursing, moving and vocalizing well, so keepers have not needed to intervene.”

“The first few days of a lion cub’s life are very fragile,” Rebecca Stites, an animal keeper at the Great Cats exhibit, said in a release. “Naba continues to prove that she has great maternal instincts, so the best course of action is for us to allow her to care for and bond with her cubs. We have every indication that she will successfully raise these cubs just as she did her previous litter.”

This is Nababiep’s third litter and father Luke’s fourth.

A lion cub cam is expected to go live at 4 p.m. today. Until then, just keep watching the video below. Update: The lion cam cub is now live.
