Did you see a bright flash and hear subsequent bang late Saturday night/early Sunday morning? Apparently many D.C. Reddit users did and it’s led to X-Files-level of conspiracy theorizing.

At about 12:20 a.m. Sunday morning, Reddit user putthatfleainabox, saw a bright flash of light, which was thought to be “flash photography,” followed by a loud bang. That person was not alone. More than 70 people chimed in on Reddit to confirm that they also had seen/heard the light and loud bang. People from Reston and Falls Church, Va, to Logan Circle and Tenleytown to parts of Northeast near Brookland and beyond said they also saw and heard the same thing. And on Twitter, more reports:

This, of course, has led to a bevy of conspiracy theories on Reddit as to what could have caused it: Was it a power transformer blowing up? A “weather ballon?” Swamp gas refracted the light from Venus? We’ll likely never know.

I talked to a Metropolitan Police Department Public Information Officer who said there were no reports of any sort of explosions in D.C. at that time on Sunday morning. I also talked to D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Tim Wilson who said they didn’t receive any reports of anything matching that description at that time. However, Wilson did say without any specific location where this might have occurred, it’s hard to find if someone reported it. With people claiming to have heard and seen said flash of light and loud bang from all over the D.C. region, it’s hard to pinpoint where it came from or who might have reported it.

A media spokesperson from Pepco also confirmed to me that their were no reports of a transformer exploding in the D.C. area this weekend. So much for that theory.

Did you see/hear this flash of light and loud bang? Maybe you know the cause of it? Maybe it was a transformer exploding. Or maybe it was aliens. Post your theories in the comments below. The truth is out there, folks.
