Update: As a Whole Foods spokesperson pointed out, the price comparisons in this post are off because some of the items at Whole Foods weren’t their Whole Foods Market 365 Everyday Value™ brand items.
Just to clarify: I approached this piece as a consumer. I went to both Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods looking for a specific list of foods and these are the prices I found when doing so. This is just what I found at Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s when I went there. Sometimes the more affordable options are out of stock, which may have been the case when I went to Whole Foods.
Anyway, here are the most comparable price comparisons of some of the items available at Whole Foods:
Organic Soy Milk
365 Everyday Value™ Organic Soymilk half-gallon: $2.99
Quinoa
365 Everyday Value™ Organic Quinoa, 16 ounces: $4.49
Cage-free Organic Eggs
A dozen Whole Foods Market organic eggs: $3.49
Organic Low Sodium Vegetable Broth
365 Everyday Value™ Organic Vegetable Broth, 32 ounces: $1.99
Original Post:
An area once famously known for drugs and prostitutes, as Councilmember Jack Evans so elegantly put it, is now known for small plates, bourgie cocktails, and now, cheap organic groceries.
Today, a new Trader Joe’s grocery store opened up on 14th Street. But not too far away, lies the P Street Whole Foods, which previously held the monopoly of buying organic in the area. Now that Trader Joe’s is open just a few blocks away, one must wonder: Which one is the best place to buy cheap organic shit? Well, DCist visited both today and compared the prices of some of your favorite organic shit. Here’s what we found out:
Organic Soy Milk
Whole Foods: $3.99
Trader Joe’s: $2.99
Quinoa
Whole Foods: $9.99
Trader Joe’s: $4.99
Gluten-Free Cheese Pizza
Whole Foods: $7.49
Trader Joe’s: $4.99
Kale
Whole Foods: $2.99
Trader Joe’s: $2.29
Cage-free Organic Eggs (six pack)
Whole Foods: $2.69
Trader Joe’s: $2.49
Organic Low Sodium Vegetable Broth
Whole Foods: $3.99
Trader Joe’s: $1.99
DC Brau “The Public” Ale (six pack)
Whole Foods: $10.99
Trader Joe’s: $9.99
Conclusion? You can buy organic shit cheaper at Trader Joe’s. Although the new Giant at City Market at O probably has cheaper stuff than both Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.
