To mark Equal Pay Day — an April 8th event to bring attention to the gender pay gap — several local businesses will offer a 23 percent discount to both women and their advocates.

The discount was organized by Lean In DC, the local circle of Sheryl Sandberg’s LeanIn.Org. From their Facebook event page:

Women make 77 cents for every dollar that a man earns. Equal Pay Day illustrates this inequality by marking the point at which women’s earnings finally equal those of men’s from the previous year. In 2014, Equal Pay Day will be held on April 8, indicating that it will have taken 3 months and 8 days for women’s wages to catch up to what men earned in 2013.

Thirteen businesses are participating thus far, including the local:

Hank’s on the Hill (5-7PM happy hour)
Uber (new customers)
Pizzeria Paradiso
Reformation Fitness
Bar Method DC
Dacha Beer Garden
Boundary Road (during Happy Hour)
The Ugly Mug (Lunch special; 9PM-close special)
Robbie Simon Jewelry (online deal)
Kendra-Phillip Jewelry (online deal)
Jaime Andrews Fitness (online deal for yoga packages and women w/ weights packages)

The gender pay gap in D.C. is actually the lowest in the nation. The American Association of University Women — which is hosting its own event that day at 5:30 p.m. — says women in D.C. earn 90 percent of what their male counterparts make, which is still pretty pathetic. But compare that to Wyoming, with its 64 percent gap, and it feels good to be a D.C. resident.
