Motorist Road Rage on DC Bicycle Route from Evan Wilder on Vimeo.
At the end of last week, DCist examined the practice of cycling with a camera. One of the cyclists we spoke to was Evan Wilder, the photojournalist recently ticketed by the Metropolitan Police Department for “following too closely” after an incident involving a driver who seemingly cut him off and threw his bike.
Because Wilder attaches a camera to his bike, we have video of the incident to review. So does MPD, whose spokeswoman last week said they are reviewing the footage. “We are investigating this crash, and we received video that we have reviewed,” MPD’s Gwen Crump said in an email today. “We will handle accordingly.”
Wilder was biking on a stretch of R Street NE off the Metropolitan Branch Trail that is painted with a sharrow. Not easy to see in the video is a contraflow lane buffered by cars, which it appears the driver believed Wilder was supposed to use. This is, of course, incorrect.
