The ranking comes from pest control company Orkin and is based on “the number of mosquito treatments the company performed in 2013.” Above us are Atlanta and Chicago; below are Detroit and Raleigh-Durham.
D.C. recorded its first death from West Nile Virus, carried by some mosquitoes, in 2012. Only one case was recorded in 2013, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
The D.C. Department of Health has several suggestions for avoiding the bugs, including staying “indoors at dawn, dusk, [and] early evening.”
