When Pharmacy Bar—the cherished “dive” bar on 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan—announced its ownership was changing hands, many wondered if that meant nothing would change, or if everything would change. As it turns out, the latter is happening.

Pretty soon, the bar formally known as Pharmacy Bar will become “Troublemaker Coffee Bar & Public House.” Well, maybe. While a press release sent by co-owner Reggie Elliot announced that the official name would be “Troublemaker Coffee Bar & Public House,” a follow-up was sent clarifying that the name was currently “awaiting the official confirmation from [the] corporate board.”

Still, while the name isn’t yet official, here’s what you can expect from it: coffee during the day, and a bar at night. In an email, Elliott says that “Troublemaker” “[intends] on joining the many businesses that open their doors during the daytime” by offering “both freshly prepared, locally produced food as well as high quality coffee that’s been ethically sourced and roasted to near-perfection by established American roasters, international roasters, as well as a few up-and-coming U.S. roasters looking for more exposure.” At night, the space is already operating as a bar.

For those fearing that “Troublemaker” will turn into another beacon of drunken debauchery on 18th Street, fear not. Elliott says that they intend to “flip the script that’s been written about Adams Morgan,” and, specifically, the neighborhood’s reputation for being a haven of “drunken debauchery, useless macho and chauvinistic displays coupled with destructive and self-destructive behavior,” on weekends.

And as for honoring the legacy of Pharmacy Bar, Elliott says that, while there’s much respect for what Pharmacy was, they have their own concepts and ideas for the space. “The bar, the name, and its 15 years of existence belong to Kristaps Kreslins, his employees, and the loyal customers who kept the place afloat, many of whom are our friends.” As for Pharmacy’s much-admired jukebox? It’s unclear. A request to find out its future has yet to be returned.
