Capitol Hill street signs have gone to a dog — and an emu, a spider, and a falcarius.
As part of the This Place Has A Voice project, the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop commissioned ten sculptures in that Southeast D.C. neighborhood for the Capitol Hill Alphabet Animal Art Project. As its name implies, the project — which was funded by the D.C. Department of Transportation, the DC Humanities Council and the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities — brings sculptures of animals to streets that share a first letter. Artists worked with local historian Mara Cherkasky. Activities surrounding the project will be announced soon.
Also part of This Place Has A Voice are nightly projections at Canal Park of “historical and contemporary photographs, videos, oral histories, slide shows, performances, installations and drawings” on a 20 by 20 foot cube. The cube is located at the south end of Canal Park, and projections begin at sunset and run until 11:30 p.m. The projects will culminate with an event day on September 20.
