Because it wouldn’t be a proper D.C. summer without a guest appearance by a sinkhole, one formed downtown yesterday evening on 14th Street NW, between Constitution Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue.

Crews are working to repair the sinkhole, the District Department of Transportation says, and the center northbound lane of 14th Street is currently closed. DCist is awaiting word from DDOT to see how long the lane will be closed for, but the Post reports that they could be working on it until at least 8 p.m. In the meantime, the sinkhole’s presence has reignited the city’s fetishization—or at least ironic fascination—of it:
Fixed RT @DDOTDC: ALERT: Center lane closed on NB 14th btwn Constitution Ave and Penn Ave, NW.
*We urge motorists to gape in awe.*

Still no word if the sinkhole has inspired any drink specials, but we’ll keep our eye out. In the meantime, the newly formed sinkhole has, at least, inspired one constructive thing: a new name for the Washington football team.
Washington Sinkholes FTW
