Last week, President Barack Obama expressed his support for D.C. statehood, while also noting, “The politics of it end up being difficult to get it through Congress, but I think it’s absolutely the right thing to do.” Rep. John Mica, a Republican member of the House Oversight committee, proved the president’s point yesterday while also insulting him.
In an interview with FOX 5’s Matt Ackland after Donald Trump’s Old Post Office groundbreaking, Mica said “I think the president must be spending too much time in Colorado because you would have to be high to think that Congress or anyone else is going to support making the District of Columbia the 51st state.”
But never fear, residents of D.C., because Mica has a solution: Give most of D.C. to Maryland and “possibly” disband the Council. If that doesn’t happen, Mica told FOX 5, he at least hopes the the Council will “get some new blood here because the District’s demographics are changing.”
Mica previously compared the District to teenagers after the budget autonomy referendum passed. He recently chaired a hearing to question D.C.’s locally passed marijuana decriminalization law.
