Screw Sharknado 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy, this summer’s real must-see spectacle is happening this weekend: the return of SUPERMOON!
That’s right, space nerds, it’s that time of the year again, when a full moon coincides to when it’s closest to the Earth. But this is no ordinary supermoon, as National Geographic explains, this weekend’s supermoon will be extra super. “Thanks to coincidental timing of the moon being at its closest approach to Earth for 2014, at 221,765 miles (356,896 kilometers) away, while in its full phase this week our planet’s companion will appear 16 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than usual,” Nat Geo says.
While the extra supermoon—which DCist is henceforth calling Lord Supermoon the Almighty—isn’t supposed to hit its full phase until Sunday at approximately 2:10 p.m., Capital Weather Gang says that “it will appear more or less full Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening for night skywatchers (at 96-99 percent illumination).”
For those keeping track at home, Lord Supermoon the Almighty is the second of three supermoons scheduled to take place in 2014. The first was last month and the next one will happen on September 9. But the other ones pale in comparison to LORD SUPERMOON THE ALMIGHTY.
