We’ve read countless words written by Dan Snyder about why he won’t change the Washington football team’s name, but now, you can get a sneak peak of him talking at length about the issue with ESPN’s “Outside the Lines.”
Though the full interview with ESPN’s John Barr, which also features Snyder’s wife Tanya, won’t air until September 2 on ESPN2, the network teased a little bit of what to expect, with Snyder attempting to explain what the team’s name means. Here’s what he says:
“A [R*****n] is a football player. A [R*****n] is our fans. The Washington [football team] fan base represents honor, represents respect, represents pride. Hopefully winning.”
And in terms of why people are misconstruing the team’s name for being offensive, he says that the name and mascot are “just historical truths, and I’d like them to understand, as I think most do, that the name really means honor, respect…Taken out of context, you can take things out of context all over the place. But in this particular case, it is what it is. It’s very obvious.”
