As a tribute to slain 18-year-old Michael Brown and a show of solidarity to the community of Ferguson, Missouri, which is currently in the midst of devastating protests and clashes with the local police force, there will be a “Moment of Silence” and rally tonight at Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park, beginning at 7 p.m.

Organizers ask anyone to “join us as we gather for a moment of silence for those who have been victims of police brutality throughout the U.S.” They also ask that people “bring posters and signs [with] the names and pictures of victims so that we can remember them and burn them in the conscious of America and the world.”

While the situation between protesters and police becomes more and more heated, people all over the country are sending messages of support to the Ferguson community. During a meeting on freshman move-in day at Howard University, students took a break to take this incredibly powerful and moving picture:

As Mother Jones reports, the picture “wasn’t so much a planned rally as a bunch of students already gathered.” The Twitter user who tweeted the photo says that they “felt [they] needed to responded to the Mike Brown issue.”
