Metro says reports of serious crimes, including mobile device snatching and bike theft, were down 31.6 percent during the first six months of 2014, compared to last year.

After a 24 percent increase in 2013, bicycle theft was down by 35 percent between January and June of 2014. The same goes for snatch theft of mobile devices (49 percent) and robberies (43 percent).

Metro Transit Police point to “increased customer awareness and outreach, data-driven officer deployment tactics, improvements in technology and intelligence sharing with law enforcement partners” as reasons for the drop.

Not budging, however, is the number of aggravated assaults. According to a Metro Transit Police crime report for August, 68 aggravated assaults were reported through that month, compared to 67 at the same time last year. Two rapes on Metro property have been reported in 2014, compared to one at that point last year.

The total number of Part 1 crimes — which also includes arson, homicide, larceny and motor vehicle theft — was 708 between January and June, according to Metro. That’s down from 996 in 2013 and 1,105 in 2010.
