For those who can’t wait for marijuana to be legalized in D.C. but don’t want to break the law, bad news: synthetic “cannabinoids ” are now considered a Schedule I drug in D.C.
According to a release from the D.C. Department of Health, all synthetic marijuana, which you may know as “spice” or “K2,” and can be found in “retail outlets, gas stations and corner stores throughout the District as herbal incense, potpourri, bath salts, or jewelry cleaner,” are now illegal, classified in the most dangerous category of drug schedules.
The DOH says that synthetic pot could potentially cause “severe psychological or physical dependence.” It may also turn them into zombies. The move to classify synthetic pot as a Schedule I drug is part of an effort by the DOH to decrease use among youth in D.C.
“In an effort to curb emerging synthetic drugs and protect children and teens, the District has developed one of the most comprehensive bans on harmful synthetic drugs” DOH director Dr. Joxel Garcia said in a release. “These substances are gaining increased prevalence among youth and unsuspecting adults. We must be diligent and proactive if we are to stop the flow of harmful drugs to the marketplace and finding its way to our children.”
Those caught manufacturing, distributing, dispensing, importing, or exporting synthetic pot—or derivations of it—will face similar fines and imprisonment for any other Schedule I drug, like heroin, LSD, or ecstasy.
