D.C. has appealed a ruling that overturned the city’s ban on carrying handguns in public.

In the brief filed last week, D.C. Attorney General Irv Nathan stated the city’s intention to appeal a July ruling by Judge Frederick Scullin and his October denial of D.C.’s motion to reconsider the ruling.

The notice did not state the city’s reasons for seeking an appeal.

D.C. began accepting applications for concealed carry permits in late October, as a stay on the July ruling expired. People who can show a legitimate need for concealed carry may apply to Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier for a permit. Just 32 applications were submitted in the first two weeks, WAMU reported.

A hearing on a motion to block implementation of D.C.’s strict concealed carry law is set for this week, although this appeal calls into question whether it will occur.
