Last year, The National Congress of American Indians released an anti-Washington football team commercial just in time for the Super Bowl.
Of course, the ad didn’t air during the game (but it did air during the NBA finals), but that’s not stopping them from producing another video just in time for the big game, just to remind everyone that our terrible professional football team boasts a racist name and mascot. To fund the effort, they’ve turned to Kickstarter to raise $20,000 for their new commercial and digital campaign “that will be bigger than any other multimillion-dollar Super Bowl ad campaign this year,” they say.
Their idea for the ad, they say on their Kickstarter page, is to digitally remove the football team’s logo from old highlight videos. The message, they say, will “show the world what it will look like when the name is gone.”
What’s left? “No R-word, no mascots, no racism. But the amazing football play and players remain.” The image, the organization hopes, will “[r]emind Washington fans that their memories and tradition will remain when the mascot changes.”
