It seems the days are numbered for Artisphere, Arlington’s multi-media arts space.

Arlington County Manager Barbara Donnellan, who was tasked with assessing the long-term sustainability of Artisphere in April of this year, recommended to the Arlington County Board today that the they close the space in early July. According to Donnellan’s statement to the board, a report conducted by her staff concluded that “after doing our best to fulfill all our contractual obligations for artists, performances, and rentals,” the center would close after June 30, ARL Now first reported.

Donnellan wrote in her statement that Artisphere “hasn’t lived up tot he projections made in our initial business plan.” Moreover, Donnellan adds that “neither has it achieved all the goals set for in the far more realistic business plan we adopted in 2011.”

After July, Donnellan recommends that the County either sublets the 60,000 square foot building or return ownership of it to Monday Properties. If the County should sublet, Donnellan writes that they should look for a “private business, public/private partnership, or organization” to help continue to foster it as a multi-media arts space.

“This is a tough decision, and a disappointing one – not only for me, but also for all those in County government, the arts community and the Rosslyn BID who have worked so tirelessly to make Artisphere successful,” Donnellan wrote “and for those who have enjoyed Artisphere’s many cultural offerings.”
