658,893 people!

That’s according to a newly released estimate from the U.S. Census Bureau, which shows that D.C.’s population grew by 9,782 people between July 2013 and July 2014. D.C. was the fifth fastest growing “state,” behind actual states North Dakota, Nevada, Texas and Colorado.

D.C.’s population is greater than Vermont’s (626,562) and Wyoming’s (584,153). According to the D.C. Office of Planning, the city’s population has not been this high since the 1970s. Since April 2010, D.C. has added 57,170 people.

“This data confirms what I have often said over the last four years – that the District is one of the most attractive, greenest, and livable cities in the nation,” Mayor Vince Gray said in a statement. “The growing number of new residents from other nations shows that we compete successfully for new residents, new jobs and new industries not only with other U.S. cities but with other countries. I am proud to have overseen continued growth of our great city’s population during each year of my administration.”
