One woman has died, two have been transported to area hospitals in critical condition, and dozens of others have been hospitalized following an incident at the L’Enfant Plaza station this afternoon.

In a press conference, Metro General Manager Richard Sarles confirmed that one passenger had died, while two others are in critical condition at George Washington Hospital, the Post reports. Additionally, 40 people were transported to Howard University Hospital and 20 to 25 others were taken to Washington Hospital Center for minor injuries and observation.

The Metropolitan Police Department is now involved into the investigation to determine what caused a train on L’Enfant Plaza’s Green and Yellow line to fill with smoke.

Original post:

Service on Metro’s Green and Yellow Line has been suspended between the Navy Yard and Pentagon City stops to the Mount Vernon Square stop after the L’Enfant Plaza station was evacuated for smoke.

Additionally, the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines, which also pass through L’Enfant Plaza, are not stopping at the station, but service for those three lines has not otherwise been affected.

A spokesperson for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services says that crews are on the scene, but the location nor cause of any fire has yet to be determined. On Twitter, the situation doesn’t seem to look good:

It should be noted that “mass casualties” in this context doesn’t necessarily mean what you think it means, but that it’s “a term utilized when additional resources are potentially necessary on large scale incidents.”
