Crime in and around Metro continues to decline, a new report shows. According to the Metro Transit Police Department’s annual security report, Metro-related crime is at a five-year low, with serious crimes like homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson reduced by nearly 27 percent in 2014.

Among the highlights of this year’s security report, is that overall parking lot crimes showed a reduction, albeit a slight one, while motor vehicle thefts and attempts were nearly 13 percent higher this year.

One of the most popular crimes to happen on Metro, mobile device theft, has decreased by about 52 percent in 2014, while robbery decreased by 35 percent. On Metrobuses, there was a slight decrease of 12 percent in crimes.

There was a slight decrease, by 13 percent, in sexual harassment in Metro, though it’s hard to say if that’s because it actually decreased or if sexual harassment went unreported.

“I am pleased that our efforts last year resulted in a significant reduction in crime,” Metro Transit Police Chief Ronald Pavlik said in a statement. “While we must still remain vigilant and never forget that one crime is one too many, it is important to thank our officers for their hard work, as well as Metro’s employees and customers for being part of the solution.”
