Ever since Ward 8 Councilmember and “Mayor-for-Life” Marion Barry passed away in November, many have been wondering how the city will memorialize him. Will it be with a statue and part of a park named after him, like the Godfather of Go-Go Chuck Brown? Perhaps a library named after him?
Well, if Councilmember Vincent Orange (D-At Large) has his way, it could be a University named after Barry. Specifically, the University of the District of Columbia.
Orange introduced a bill this morning to rename UDC the “Marion S. Barry, Jr. University of the District of Columbia.” Whether or not this makes it through to the Council remains to be seen, but Orange has at least one supporter: Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), who co-introduced the bill. The bill is set to be discussed at the next Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting.
