It’s going to snow this evening, you might have heard. If not, consider this your warning. It’s going to snow. How much? Well, it’s not going to be an insignificant snowstorm, forecasters say.

According to the Capital Weather Gang, we can see expect 4-8 inches (with 7-8 inches most likely) in the immediate D.C. area, with 5-10 inches in the far southern suburbs and 3-6 inches in the far northern suburbs.

The current models show that light snow should start between 3 and 5 p.m. today and slowly come down heavier, continuing until sometime between 4 and 7 a.m. tomorrow morning. If the forecast holds true, this will be the biggest snow of the season thus far, which means you can expect school and work closures, commuting delays—both on the road and on rail—and 100 percent panic by every single person in D.C. Seriously, why are you not in line to buy milk, bread, and toilet paper right now?

On top of the snow, the serious cold snap we’ve been experiencing will continue. The temperature this morning was in the single digits, with the wind chill making it feel like it’s between -5 and -10 degrees. This means that D.C. is still under a cold emergency, which you can find out more about—as well as how to help people on the streets who don’t have a home—here.

If tomorrow’s snow comes down as planned, remember that you need to shovel your sidewalks or else risk being fined. But for D.C. residents with disabilities, that proves to be a difficult task. Thus the D.C. government has established the D.C. Citizen Snow Team, which utilizes volunteers to help shovel the sidewalks of residents who can’t do it themselves. You can sign up for that here.

Stay safe and warm out there, everyone.
