Mayor Muriel Bowser continues to make moves in her administration, today with the appointment of a new D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Chief, Gregory Dean.

Name doesn’t sound familiar to you? That’s because Dean comes from the other Washington, where he spent the past decade as the fire chief of Seattle.

“Chief Dean is a proven, collaborative leader who led a department with an international reputation for its fire-based EMS performance, Bowser said in a statement. “I am certain that he will work with our emergency first responders and the community to move the department forward in exciting ways.”

Of course, Dean will have his work cut our for him. The DCFEMS hasn’t had the most proven track record in recent years, what with departments very public trouble with faulty equipment and the incident with Medric Mills, who collapsed and died right outside a fire station.

Dean takes over for former fire chief Kenneth Ellerbe, who stepped down in June. Edward Mills III, who has served as acting chief since Ellerbe stepped down, will serve as Interim Chief during the transition.

“I look forward to working with Mayor Bowser and FEMS providers to deliver efficient and compassionate fire and emergency medical services to the residents in all eight Wards,” Dean added in a statement “We will build on the Department’s strengths and bring a data driven approach that will ensure we are delivering top-notch services 24/7.” Let’s hope so.
