Wasn’t it JUST spring, like the other day? Photo by Beau Finley.
Yes, it is officially spring. No, no one told the weather.
Unfortunately, it isn’t exactly unheard of to have snow around the first day of spring, which is usually on March 20 or 21 in the U.S.).
D.C. had a trace of snow on March 21 as recently as 2013, according to Kevin Witt, spokesman for the National Weather Service. But the last times it really stuck were on March 20, 1990 and March 21, 1988—both days saw .4 inches.
As for today, the snow isn’t likely to accumulate or even hang around for much longer. The snow/rain mix should end around 11 a.m., Witt says. If the precipitation lasts longer than that, we’ll see a drizzle or brief shower.
So, yeah, happy first day of spring. Or something.
